About this species

The tench (Tinca tinca) is a calm and resilient freshwater fish, often found in still or slow-moving waters rich in vegetation. Recognizable by its olive-green coloration, small scales, and thick, slimy skin, it thrives in warm, low-oxygen environments where many other species struggle. Tench feed primarily on the bottom, searching for insects, larvae, and organic matter. Although not as aggressive as predatory species, it is highly valued among anglers for its subtle bites and surprisingly strong fights.

Description

The tench is a stocky freshwater fish with a rounded body, small scales, and a thick protective layer of mucus. Its coloration ranges from olive-green to dark bronze, allowing it to blend perfectly into weedy environments. It also has small barbels at the corners of its mouth.

Habitat

Tench prefer still or slow-moving waters such as lakes, ponds, canals, and quiet river backwaters. They thrive in areas with dense aquatic vegetation and soft, muddy bottoms. They are well adapted to low-oxygen conditions.

Behaviour

Tench are bottom feeders that spend most of their time moving slowly along the substrate in search of food. They are most active during warm weather and often feed during early morning and late evening hours.

Size & Growth

Tench usually grow to moderate sizes, but in rich environments they can reach impressive weights. Their growth is steady, especially in warm, nutrient-rich waters.
