About this species
The European bullhead (Cottus gobio) is a small bottom-dwelling fish found in cold, clear streams with rocky substrates. It spends most of its time hiding under stones and feeding on insect larvae and other small invertebrates. Rarely targeted by anglers, it is more often encountered incidentally when fishing in clean mountain waters. Its presence indicates stable, well-oxygenated habitats.
Description
The European bullhead is a small fish with a broad, flattened head and a tapered body. Its coloration is usually brown or mottled, allowing it to blend into rocky bottoms.
Habitat
It inhabits cold, fast-flowing streams and small rivers with high oxygen levels. It prefers rocky substrates with plenty of cover such as stones and crevices.
Behaviour
Bullhead stay close to the bottom and rarely move far from shelter. They are most active during low light conditions but can be encountered throughout the day.
Size & Growth
This species remains small throughout its life. Growth depends on water quality and food availability.
