About this species
The barbel (Barbus barbus) is a powerful river fish known for its strength, endurance, and preference for fast-flowing waters. Easily recognized by its elongated body and distinctive barbels near the mouth, it thrives in clean, oxygen-rich rivers with gravel or rocky bottoms. Constantly moving along the riverbed, barbel feed on insects, larvae, and other small organisms. For anglers, it is a highly respected species due to its incredible fighting ability and the demanding conditions in which it is typically caught.
Description
The barbel is a strong, elongated freshwater fish with a cylindrical body adapted for life in fast currents. It has four prominent barbels near its mouth, which it uses to detect food along the riverbed.
Habitat
Barbel inhabit medium to large rivers with moderate to strong current. They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with gravel, stone, or mixed substrates. They are rarely found in still waters.
Behaviour
Barbel are bottom-oriented fish that constantly move in search of food. They are most active during warmer months and often feed in groups. Despite their calm appearance, they are extremely powerful when hooked.
Size & Growth
Barbel can grow to impressive sizes, often exceeding 70 cm and reaching several kilograms in weight. In ideal river systems, they can reach trophy proportions.
