About this species

The sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) is an ancient freshwater species from the sturgeon family, recognizable by its elongated body, rows of bony scutes, and distinctive barbels. It inhabits large rivers with clean, well-oxygenated water and prefers sandy or gravel bottoms where it searches for food. A true bottom-dweller, it feeds on larvae, worms, and small aquatic organisms. Although not a primary sport fishing target, it is highly valued due to its rarity and unique appearance. Catching a sterlet is often considered a special moment for anglers fishing large river systems.

Description

The sterlet is the smallest member of the sturgeon family found in European freshwater systems. It has an elongated body without traditional scales, covered instead with rows of hard, bony scutes. Its mouth is located on the underside of the head, accompanied by four barbels used to detect food.

Habitat

It inhabits large rivers such as the Danube, Sava, and Tisa. It prefers clean, oxygen-rich water and sandy or gravel substrates. It is rarely found in stagnant or heavily polluted waters.

Behaviour

The sterlet is a bottom-dwelling species that spends most of its time searching for food along the riverbed. It feeds on larvae, worms, and small benthic organisms. It is generally calm and not aggressive.

Size & Growth

Sterlet typically reaches lengths of 40–60 cm, although larger specimens can occur. Compared to other fish species, its growth is relatively slow.
