AI Fish Recognition — Tips for Better Results

Our AI covers 68 freshwater species. These simple tips will help you get accurate suggestions every time.

How the AI Works

My Fishing Crew uses a machine learning model trained on thousands of freshwater fish photos. When you upload a catch photo, the AI analyzes it and suggests up to 3 species with confidence scores.

Tips for a Better AI Result

Good lighting is key. Natural daylight gives the best results. Avoid flash directly on the fish — it washes out the colours and patterns the AI uses to identify species.

Show the whole fish. The AI needs to see the full body, fins and tail. Avoid photos where the fish is partially hidden by your hand or the ground.

Lay the fish flat. A flat, side-on view gives the clearest shape profile. This is the angle the AI was trained on most.

Avoid heavily wet or muddy fish. Mud and excessive water can obscure the scales and colouration. A quick rinse helps.

Multiple species in one photo won't work well. The AI looks for one fish per photo. If you caught multiple species, photograph them separately.

What the AI Can and Cannot Do

The AI covers 68 freshwater species found in European waters. It works best for common species like carp, zander, pike and catfish. Rare or juvenile fish may get lower confidence scores or incorrect suggestions.

The AI suggestion is a helper, not a final answer. Always verify the suggestion yourself before saving — especially for species you're less familiar with.

Help the AI Improve

After logging a catch, you can confirm or correct the AI suggestion. This feedback is used to improve the model over time. Every correction you make helps the AI get better for everyone.
